Philosophy

Economic, political, and social prosperity can only come when all groups in society enjoy safety and equal opportunity. Peace and development can be achievable only when women and girls are given equal voice and opportunity in their communities and when violence against women no longer exists.

The women’s shelter movement plays a critical leadership role in the global effort to end violence against women and their children. Shelters and safe spaces are often created with limited resources, and born out of the necessity for victims to find safety without feeling shame or stigma, and to receive help and resources. Advocates in these shelters and safe spaces are typically the first to respond to and help victims and often provide services and resources to the victim’s family, the perpetrator, and the community.

With support from their communities, governments, and fellow advocates, local leaders can work toward ending violence against women. We believe that advocates who come to the conference understand why violence against women is pervasive and know what is needed to end violence against women in their communities. They will come to the conference to gain new skills, resources, support, and assistance in implementing their strategies to create communities free of violence.

Finally, as we work toward finding solutions to end violence against women, the voices of victims, as experts, need to be part of the conversation. The delegates attending WCWS will represent the voices of victims, and bring to light their experiences, determination and incredible bravery. Together, we will find solutions that end violence against women.
