May 26, 2015 – the 3rd World Conference of Women’s Shelters is excited to announce Hina Jilani as a key speaker. The internationally recognized expert and advocate of human rights will share her experience with the conference participants.

Hina Jilani confirmed her presence at the 3rd World Conference of Women Shelters. With her experience as a legal aid worker, a shelter manager, a civil society activist, and member of the Elders, Jilani will contribute to the conference as a key note speaker by sharing knowledge and inspiration.

Jilani is internationally well known for her extensive work in critical human rights investigations. In February 1980 with her sister Asma Jahangir, Jilani co-founded Pakistan's first all-female legal aid practice, AGHS Legal Aid Cell (ALAC) in Lahore (Pakistan). In addition to providing pro bona legal aid, she has also helped set up a shelter for women fleeing violence and abuse. She has specialized in human rights litigation, and is especially concerned with the human rights of women, children, minorities, bonded and child labor, political and other prisoners.

Jilani is also affiliated with the United Nations Center for Human Rights, the Carter Center, and the UN Conference on Women. From 2000 to 2008, she was the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Human Rights Defenders. In 2006, she was appointed to the UN International Fact-Finding Commission on Darfur (Sudan). Jilani is also a member of the Eminent Jurists Panel on Terrorism, Counter-terrorism and Human Rights. In 2009, she was appointed to the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict. On 11 July 2013, Jilani joined The Elders, a group of statesmen, peace activists and human rights advocates, brought together by Nelson Mandela (see www.theelders.org). She was appointed as a Board member of the International Service for Human Rights in May 2013.

The 3rd World Conference of Women’s Shelters is honored that Hina Jilani will be present at the conference. Her contribution is expected to increase the knowledge and inspiration shared amongst participants of the conference.
