About Us

National Network to End Domestic Violence

The 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters is hosted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Located in the United States, NNEDV is a social change organization dedicated to creating a social, political and economic environment in which violence against women no longer exists. NNEDV is a membership organization of state and territorial domestic violence coalitions that empowers survivors and their children through a network of national, local and community-based organizations. We provide leadership, advocate for effective public policy, improve institutional and cultural systems, share knowledge internationally, and change societal attitudes about domestic violence.

Global Network of Women's Shelters

Founded in 2009, the Global Network of Women’s Shelter’s (GNWS) purpose is unite the women’s shelter movement globally to make change to end violence against women and their children.

GNWS is an active global network, working to ensure global awareness of violence against women and their children. Its goal is to support and strengthen the women’s shelter movement and promote effective policies and their implementation in order to prevent violence and protect and empower women and their children, and to promote social change that ends violence and oppression against women and their children.

Current members of GNWS include networks and programs from Armenia, Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Nepal, Portugal, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sweden, the United States, and Vietnam.

1st World Conference of Women's Shelters

The 1st World Conference of Women's Shelters was held September 8-11, 2008 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was the first time family violence prevention workers in Canada and around the world came together to network, to share proven innovations, and to learn from international experts and each other.

In addition, at the 1st World Conference of Women’s Shelters, delegates established an international community of practice; established local, national, and international networks; began an international data collection of global shelter statistics; supported ongoing research projects; and more.
